Day 8: Weave Your Own Ojo de Dios – Children’s Creative Summer Challenge

Welcome to Day 8 of our Children’s Creative Summer Challenge! Today’s activity is packed with colour, creativity, and a sprinkle of cultural inspiration.

Wendy and Theo have been getting crafty with a beautiful woven design called an Ojo de Dios – which means “God’s Eye” in Spanish. Originally made by the Huichol people of Mexico, these colourful creations are believed to bring protection and good luck.

Whether you follow their design or add your own imaginative twist, we can’t wait to see what you create!

Be Inspired by Wendy and Theo

In the video, Wendy and Theo show us one fun way to make an Ojo de Dios. Start by gluing your sticks into a cross, then wrapping your wool around the middle to hold them in place. Once that’s secure, it’s time to weave! Switch colours as you go to create bold patterns and vibrant layers.

But remember – this challenge isn’t about following steps perfectly. It’s about using the idea as a spark and making it your own. Maybe you’ll follow their colourful pattern… or maybe you’ll invent something totally different!

Why We Love This Activity

This craft is fun and hands-on – and it’s secretly educational too!
✔ Builds fine motor skills
✔ Encourages patience and focus
✔ Supports pattern and colour recognition
✔ Sparks creative freedom
✔ Introduces children to cultural crafts

It’s a perfect quiet-time activity for indoors or outside – and a lovely one to do side by side as a family.

Two wooden lolly sticks glued together in a cross shape, ready to begin the Ojo de Dios craft. Coloured wool tied around the centre of the cross, starting to wrap around the middle.

What You’ll Need:

Lolly sticks (or any sticks you can find in the garden or park!)

A selection of coloured wool or yarn

Scissors

Glue (PVA, glue stick, or even a glue dot)

Bright layers of coloured wool building up around the sticks as the design grows.

How To Make Your Own Ojo de Dios

  1. Here’s one way to make an Ojo de Dios – but feel free to take your own path. Add your own colours, textures, and ideas as you go.

    1. Make your base: Glue two lolly sticks together in a cross shape. Let the glue dry.

    2. Start your weave: Take your first colour of wool and tie it around the centre of the cross. Trim off the loose end.

    3. Wrap the centre: With the knot at the back, wrap your wool around the centre of the cross four times in one direction.

    4. Turn and repeat: Turn the cross anti-clockwise, then wrap the wool around the centre again four times. Repeat two more times until the centre feels strong.

    5. Begin weaving: Now start wrapping the wool around one stick at a time – once around each stick, then move to the next in a circular pattern.

    6. Switch colours: When you’re ready to change colour, cut the wool and glue it down. Start your next colour right next to it and keep weaving!

    7. Keep going: Repeat the wrapping process, switching colours whenever you like, until your sticks are full.

    8. Finish off: Cut the end of your wool and glue it in place. You now have your very own Ojo de Dios!

You can add a loop at the top if you’d like to hang it up – in a window, on a door, or even outside.

Almost complete Ojo de Dios with multiple colours and a few sections of stick still showing.

Creative Twists and Alternative Ideas

Your design can be as simple or elaborate as you like! Here are some fun ways to mix it up:

Nature-inspired: Use found sticks, leaves or feathers to decorate your finished piece.
Monochrome magic: Try using shades of just one colour for a stylish look.
Add extras: Beads, buttons, tassels, ribbons – whatever you have in your craft box!
Make a mini version: Use cocktail sticks and thin thread for a teeny-tiny charm.
Try extra sticks: What happens if you use three or four sticks instead of two?
