20 Days Of Creativity: Day 13 – Lino Printing: Bold & Beautiful Prints

Welcome to Day 13 of our 20 Days of Creativity Challenge! Today we’re diving into the world of lino printing — a bold and tactile craft that combines design, carving, and printing. Lino printing is perfect for making unique cards, artwork, and home décor items.

This is just an idea to spark your creativity — what will you create today? Each print you make is personal, one-of-a-kind, and full of character.

What is Lino Printing?

Lino printing is a traditional printmaking technique where you carve a design into a piece of lino, roll ink over the surface, and press it onto paper or fabric. The carved areas remain unprinted, creating a striking contrast between ink and negative space.

It’s a craft that encourages patience, precision, and creativity. You can experiment with simple shapes for bold graphic prints or intricate patterns for detailed designs.

In addition to its artistic benefits, lino printing is surprisingly therapeutic. The repetitive motions of carving and inking help you slow down and focus, offering a sense of calm similar to meditation.

Benefits of Lino Printing

This craft is not only fun but also brings a variety of benefits:

  • Encourages mindfulness: Concentrating on your design helps quiet the mind.

  • Improves hand-eye coordination: Carving intricate patterns requires focus and precision.

  • Boosts creativity: You can experiment with textures, shapes, and layering inks.

  • Produces unique results: No two prints are exactly alike.

  • Great for gifting: Handmade prints make thoughtful, personal presents.

In addition, the tactile nature of lino printing can feel incredibly satisfying and grounding.

How to Get Started

  • Choose a lino block and sketch your design lightly on the surface.
  • Carefully carve your design using lino carving tools, removing the areas you don’t want to print.
  • Apply ink evenly with a roller over the raised areas.
  • Press the lino onto paper or fabric, either by hand or using a printing press.
  • Lift the block to reveal your print and allow it to dry.
  • You can layer multiple prints, experiment with different colours, or create patterns for stationery or wall art.
  • Another option is to combine lino prints with other crafts, such as watercolour backgrounds or hand lettering.
