A favourite summer activity of ours is to get creative with chalk outdoors!
All you need is some outdoor chalk (sometimes called pavement chalk) and a safe area to draw on, such as your garden patio. Then simply let your imaginations run wild!
This low-prep activity is fun for children and grown-ups alike, providing a great hands-on activity which enables children to engage with their environment. It has so many developmental benefits too, such as fine and gross motor skills, hand-eye coordination, balance, creativity and more.
Here's some simple steps to help you and your little one have fun making your own chalk art:
You'll need:
Outdoor chalk (sometimes called pavement chalk)
A safe outdoor space to draw, such as your garden patio.
Instructions:
1. Simply use the chalks to draw on the surface.
2. Once you have finished, it is great fun to wash away the chalk using water, or wait for the rain to wash it away.
The possibilities for play and creativity with a chalk art activity are endless.
Here are some of our favourite ideas to get you started:
Explore mark-making and have fun drawing all sorts of squiggles and shapes together.
Draw something you can see around you, such as flowers, trees, birds, or clouds.
Take it in turns to trace around each other's shadows or the shadow of a plant or a garden chair.
Draw roads which your child can drive toy cars along, or a road big enough for them to ride their scooter around.
Don't forget good old-fashioned Hop Scotch.
