Here's a closer look at the sounds babies make and how you can respond to their needs.

What sounds do babies make?

Babies make a variety of sounds, even from their first days of life. They use sounds to express their needs and communicate with you. Here are some of the common sounds your baby may make:

Cooing and babbling: These are the early sounds your baby makes as they start to explore their voice. They're usually vowel sounds like "ah," "oh," and "eh."

Crying: Crying is a natural way for babies to communicate that they need something. It could be that they're hungry, tired, or need a diaper change. It's essential to respond promptly to crying to build trust and security.

Grunting: Your baby may grunt when they're trying to have a bowel movement or push something out.

Sneezing: Sneezing is a natural reflex for babies and helps clear their airways.

Hiccupping: Hiccups are common in babies and usually go away on their own. It's nothing to worry about unless they persist for a long time.

Understanding Dunstan Baby Language

The Dunstan Baby Language is a theory proposed by an Australian mother who claimed that all babies under three months old use a set of five "words" to express their needs. The theory suggests that parents can learn to recognize these sounds to respond more effectively to their babies.

The five universal baby sounds are:

  • "Neh" (hunger)
  • "Eh" (need to burp)
  • "Owh/Oah" (tired)
  • "Eair/Eargghh" (cramps/low belly pain)
  • "Heh" (physical discomfort; feel hot or wet)

While the Dunstan Baby Language theory has gained popularity, it's important to note that it's only a theory and may not be accurate for all babies.

Every baby is unique, and it's essential to observe and listen to your baby to understand their needs and communication style.
