Day 15: Create Fun Beaded Flip Flops – Children’s Creative Summer Challenge

Nothing says summer vibes like flip flops — and today we’re bringing them to life with beads, bright colours, and a splash of creativity. These beaded flip flops are quick to make, fun to decorate, and look stunning whether displayed on their own or as part of a seaside-themed artwork.

We’ve used painted footprints for ours, but you can adapt this idea in so many ways — why not draw your own, trace around your feet, or cut colourful shapes from patterned paper? You could even make miniature flip flops to decorate cards or scrapbooks.

What You’ll Need:

  • White card or paper

  • Paint (any colour you like)

  • Scissors

  • Glue stick

  • 2 pipe cleaners

  • Beads (any shape or colour)

Cut-out footprints glued to backing paper – footprints mounted on colourful card, ready for flip flop straps to be added.

How to Make Beaded Flip Flops

    1. Make your footprints – Paint your feet and press them onto card or paper to make two prints. If you prefer, you can sponge on paint for a smooth texture. Leave to dry.

    2. Cut and mount – Cut out your footprints and glue them onto a backing sheet. Trim, leaving a border for decoration.

    3. Make holes for straps – Use a thin paintbrush end or similar to make three holes in each ‘foot’: one between the big toes and one on either side near the top.

    4. Add the straps – Fold a pipe cleaner in half, twist in the middle, then push it through the top hole. Thread beads onto each side, then push the ends through the two side holes, bend over, and secure with tape on the back.

    5. Show them off – Display your flip flops as they are, or add them to a painted beach scene for that perfect summer touch.

Ideas to Inspire Your Flip Flop Designs

  • Go bright – Use neon paints and glitter beads for a festival look.

  • Beachy vibes – Decorate with tiny shells, sand, or wave patterns.

  • Mini makes – Create smaller versions as decorations for cards or gift tags.

  • Mixed media – Try using ribbon, string, or felt for the straps instead of beads.
