Today’s activity is all about creating a colourful scrape art turtle craft for kids, a fun and simple painting technique perfect for summer creativity.
We’re taking inspiration from the ocean and making our own colourful scrape art turtle. This is a simple, sensory-friendly activity that children of all ages can enjoy – and the best part is that no two turtles will ever look the same.
You can use the classic turtle idea below, or take this technique and turn it into anything you like – a fish, a rainbow shell, even an abstract piece of art for your wall.
What You’ll Need:
- Thick card (an old cereal box works well)
- 3–4 colours of paint (bright or pastel – your choice)
- An old credit card, store card, or plastic spatula
- Turtle shell or a round guide for size
- Pen or pencil
- Glue
- Scissors
- Green paper (or paint your own green card)
How to make your scrape art turtle:
- Drop your paint – Squeeze blobs of different coloured paint onto your thick card. Scatter them around for a mix of shades.
- Scrape and swirl – Using your old card or spatula, scrape the paint across the card in swirling or sweeping motions until the surface is completely covered. Let it dry.
- Create your turtle parts – Use your shell as a guide to size and cut out a head, two arms, and two legs from green paper.
- Assemble your turtle – Glue the shell in the middle and add the head, arms, and legs around it. Draw on eyes and a smile to bring your turtle to life.
Alternative ideas to inspire you:
Turn your scrape art into the body of a fish, butterfly, or even a colourful dinosaur.
Use metallic paint for a shimmering ocean effect.
Add googly eyes, sequins, or glitter to your design for extra texture.
